Finished my Magpul Upgrade on my new Tactical.

Post by Automag »

I picked up a new 870 Tactical and it was begging to be upgraded. I saved some money by buying the model i did, and doing the upgrades myself, and it's looking pretty good now. I still have a few upgrades i want to do, but i'm pretty happy with it for now. I was torn between going with Black and FDE, i gave up debating it and went with Black...lol.
Here's my 870 when i brought it home. Price $479.00

So i ordered the following:
Magpul SGA Stock
Magpul Super Cell Adapter
Magpul Rear Sling Mount
Magpul MOE Fore End
Mesa 6 Rd Sidesaddle
Remington Super Cell Buttpad Total Pats Cost : $249.00

Taking my time i was finished in about 40 minutes.

What it looks like now...

I have a few things i plan to add/change to complete this build:
GG+G Follower
Non MIM Extractor
CDM BMT Light Mount
Inforce Weapon Light
And Maybe a Magpul AFG2
And i'm really liking how it shoots now, that Super Cell is worth every penny! Using Federal Power-Shok 00 Buckshot.
Any comments, questions or advice would be appreciated.

nice shotgun there, did yours come with the mag tube extended already or did you have to install one. I am asking because I have had major problems with me Remington 2+ shot Mag tube extension kit, at this time I think it was a total waste of $50.00 dollars.
I really like the look of you shotgun, I have a ATI 6 position stock and grip. How does that Magpul stock hold up during shooting. I have pumped around 200 shells through mine so far and I has gone through several transformations since I bought it.

Thanks! My 870 did come with the Remington +2 ext installed. I have however added one to another 870 with no problems in function; actually i really like that particular mag extension for a +2. I love the Magpul SGA Stock. It handles great, it's design makes it fun to shoot, and is very comfortable, yet stout as hell!. It is also adjustable (via spacers) to find the best LOP fit for each user. If you add a Super Cell Butt Pad to it, it reduces recoil big time. I've experimented with many stocks on my other 870, so i knew i was going Magpul on this build. I don't know what to say about the problems you're having with you Rem mag extension, most people i've talked to really like that extension. What problems exactly are you having with your Remington +2 mag ext?

Any other views on the stock Magpul SGA recoil pad vs. the Supercell, or the Limbsaver? Took my 870P out last weekend to finally try it out, and it did kick like a mule. I'm sure a lot of it is my grip technique I need to work on to get that "push-pull" grip going. Also want to try some alternate stances to use upper pecs closer to mid-mass / sight line, rather than shoulder pocket for placing the butt pad.. Just takes practice. Haven't shot a 12 gauge for at least 15 years until now.

I think the recoil pad that comes with the Magpul SGA Stock isn't bad; i say this when comparing what came on my original stock. That recoil pad was like a "rubber brick". I'm not joking, it bruised the hell out of my shoulder. The magpul recoil pad has some softness and a good design to it. It it designed for "all purpose" use, hence the aggressive tread pattern on it.

The Supercell claims to reduce recoil by 54%. I don't know if that's true, but it sure as hell reduces felt recoil, and isn't "too soft" as some have claimed. I love it myself. The only experience i have with a Limbsaver recoil pad is when i used the Mesa Tactical Urbino Stock. I liked that one a lot too, it reduced recoil for sure. It was, however a pistol grip stock, so i think the combination of the rubberized pistol grip and Limbsaver recoil pad gave it an overall great recoil reducing effect. I've heard it was a good recoil pad choice for other stocks.

Why i like the Magpul SGA stock with either recoil pad (Magpul/Supercell) is the build of the stock itself. When shooting, i wrap my hand around the "semi grip" part of the stock and place my thumb firmly on the rubber pad on top (the bolt slot cover) and it has traction there. Then of course just make sure my stance is right and the recoil pad is firmly planted in my shoulder before firing. I will say that going with the Supercell is well worth using IMHO.

Very nice package Automag, I have purchased the Tactical too and the plan is to have it build exactly the same way you did. The projects has been "on hold" for too many months now, so time to move on. 8-)

Thanks Viper. I really like the choices i made and i'm glad i went with Magpul! I'm also very happy with the way it shoots and handles. I only have two updates/addons that i really have left to do (i've put that on hold way too long too). I was debating whether to just put a 2" pic rail on my forend, or buy a good clamp that mounts on the barrel/mag tube. So i think i'm going with the latter; a CDM BMT clamp with a short pic rail on it. I've also been debating going with a Streamlight TRL-1 HL and a Inforce WML. Both are great and waterproof and shockproof and great quality, but i'm going with the Inforce WML. So i think i'll be done..lol. Anyways, Good luck and have fun fixing yours up. You can't go wrong with Magpul and Mesa products!!!

I finally got around to finish upgrading my 870. I added a Magpul AFG2 and a Streamlight TRL-1 Light (the Inforce was too long in my opinion). I used a Magpul L5 rail for the AFG and a Magpul L2 rail for the light. I also put in a GG+G Enhanced Follower and made a couple other small changes.

Yeah I got a Choate mag tub kit and like it much better. I have decided to get the Magpul SGA stock and sell my ATI stock, no luck selling it yet. I also ordered the light rail for the Magpul forend it's Magpuls Cantilever rail for there flashlight mount. I really cannot wait to get the cash to get the Magpul SGA stock.

It's good to hear you are having no problems with, and are happy with the Choate mag extension. It's funny you mentioned the Magpul cantilever rail. I was ordering a CDM BMT clamp with a pic rail, and while i was on Amazon, i thought why not order the cantilever rail too, just to see how that compared to the 2" magpul rail i had. Well it turned out that was just the ticket; it sat further forward (no possibility of pinching of my thumb) and was well, perfect for my needs. I am keeping the CDM clamp for future use, but i'm all set with my light mounted perfectly now.
I'm sure you'll really like the Magpul SGA Stock. I have a nice pistol grip stock myself, and i like it a lot, but after a trip or two to the range, i come home and clean my gun, and put my Magpul stock back on!! Good luck selling your ATI Stock. I use ebay to sell my used and unwanted parts; there is always someone looking for what you're selling on there. Just an option i thought i'd mention. Oh yeah, did you list your stock on this forum's Items for sale section? Anyway, good luck and happy shooting.
