"NRA Shotgun" from American Legacy Firearms

I just got my May edition of American Rifleman in the mail, and saw a full-page ad inside for a commemorative, limited edition "NRA Shotgun". It's fancy-looking enough, but it turns out it's actually a dressed-up H&R Pardner Pump, which is a Chinese-manufactured clone of the Remington 870.

Now, I'm not trying to push any brand loyalty here and claim that the 870 should be the obvious choice, there are plenty of iconic American shotguns; it just seems disappointing that these guns are based on cheap, imported knock-offs of an actual American design. I suppose the H&R PP does have some older-style lines, and perhaps there were legal issues with using a gun with a "bigger" brand name (though both H&R and Remington are owned by the same holding company), or maybe the decision to use the PP is just the custom shop trying to boost their profit on the contract. Whatever the reason, the choice still seems kind of... distasteful?

Definitely a bad choice. Remington, Winchester, Mossberg, there are plenty of options besides a Chinese knock-off. Very surprising the NRA would go that route.
