Do you need to clean a new shotgun?

Hello everyone I got a new Mossberg 500 and I was wondering if you need to clean the shotgun before shooting. I was hunting last week and it was my first time shooting a shotgun. I missed all 5 of my shots on sitting ducks when at about 20 yards using #3 steel shot and a modified choke with the 28" barrel. I had the bead lined up perfectly on the target but still missed. Do I just need to clean the bore or does it just need to break in some more?
