Remington 870 light primer strikes

Post by albertwrobel »

Hello,
I need some troubleshooting advice for an 870 Super Mag 12 gauge. I've fired several thousand rounds through this gun, and it’s cleaned regularly. Recently, I’ve been experiencing consistent light primer strikes with various brands of shells—both high brass and low brass, premium and budget options. Typically, only one out of three rounds fires.

Upon disassembly, I noticed a small imperfection on the hammer where it contacts the firing pin. Could the hammer be causing this issue? Should I consider replacing both the firing pin and the hammer?

Only one out of 3 shells firing is pretty drastic. Could be the firing pin or the hammer. Pull the bolt out and manually push on the firing pin. Does the end look broken or excessively worn? Does the pin protrude enough through the bolt? Check the firing pin spring, if it's broken it may be preventing the pin from traveling enough.

Then I'd pull the trigger assembly and look at the hammer spring, it may be worn out or damaged.

Can you post pics? Certainly of the hammer wear you see.

Initially I'm thinking worn/broken springs first but if you have worn the hammer or pin I'm sure it's time to replace the springs as well.
