How-To Video: Using a follower instead of the retainer.
In this video, I demonstrate how to replace the magazine spring retainer with a stock plastic 870 magazine follower on builds without a magazine extension. This setup makes it much faster to take down or reassemble the magazine, saves wear and tear on the gun, and may even give you a little extra space in the magazine, depending on what cap and retainer you're using.
This is very easy to do, and will work on 870s with or without the detents inside the magazine tube.
This the first in a planned series of how-to videos I'm producing, featuring the Remington 870. I'd welcome any input on the format, or on topics you'd like to see in future videos.
By the way, does this forum support embedding videos at all?

Nice video. It will benefit many viewers.
Don't buy it if you can't sell it.

What is the practical purpose for this? I have watched the video, but I kept the sound off.

I think watching it with the sound on would help your understanding.
The short version is that replacing the spring retainer with a follower will allow you to take-down, reassemble, and reconfigure your shotgun faster and more easily; without using any tools.

Not just older models. The new-style plastic spring retainers are less of a hassle than the older metal ones, but they still add time to the take-down process, and you usually need a screwdriver or other tool to disengage them from the bumps inside the tube.lockoutmonkey wrote:I understand now.
