870 Tactical receiver stained

Post by esblow »

I had a Mesa Tactical SureShell Aluminum Carrier on my 870 tactical for a few years. Got tired of it and when I took it off the receiver is stained a slightly reddish color where the rubber pad sat between the carrier and the receiver.

Does anyone out there know of the best solvent to use to remove the stain? There is no sticky residue. I did not use the optional adhesive when I mounted it.

I’ll try to post a pic. I tried searching already and couldn’t find anything like this.

Thanks

Hmmmmm. I would try a hairdryer set on medium first and try to volatize-off whatever that is before I'd slap solvents on it. Then perhaps some Hoppe's No.9 and a soft toothbrush. Let us know.

I had the exact same thing happen to me.

I believe it is rust as the rubber pad may have trapped moisture. I tried kroil and bronze wool but that did not help. I ended up getting the gun reparkerized. I also ditched the Mesa side saddle. That rubber pad is there to prevent scratches. It seems to leave a far worse problem if you are not keeping up on oiling the gun.

That’s what I thought. Thanks. Wish I could get Mesa to pay for it though. 👍

Why? You are the one that put it on. I bet they never claimed any changes to finish. And you know what? It doesn't affect function one bit. :P

I would not think that they would claim any changes to the finish. Nobody would buy it if they did.

I see no reason why Mesa should be blamed. I live in a humid environment and if you do not take care of your guns they rust. No one's fault but my own if I have a gun damaged by rust.

I don't blame Mesa for me not oiling the gun. I just will not use their product as other companies make sidesaddles without the drawbacks I have experienced with the Mesa.

Hang onto the carrier - if you sell the shotgun, put it back on.
