Is this 870 a trap model?

Post by JoBob »

I recently purchased this 16 gauge Wingmaster and my questions brought me to this forum. Reasons I think this may be a trap model or made into one are; 1. knurled sighting plane on barrel, 2. 3/4 length high comb, 3. aluminum butt pad and 4. extended and enlarged pistol grip end. The large pistol grip is the first thing one notices when shouldering this shotgun. I really like this shotgun, especially without any checkering. The "finger groove" forearm makes me wonder if this might be after market furniture. What I find odd about it possibly being a trap model is this 1959, 16 gauge model has a 26" modified barrel. What do you think?

I believe someone put a custom stock and forend on the gun. To the best of my knowledge the only Trap Guns produced by Remington were 12ga. I used a TC Grade for my Trap shooting in the 70's.

Trap grade-Wingmasters' usually had higher combs and ribs, and much better wood. That looks like an aftermarket wood used by someone who used it to shoot trap. Still, all-in-all, a nice gun.
