I purchases a new Remington 870 express some years ago and noticed problems early on. About half the time, shells would not be released from the magazine no matter how many times or how hard I worked the pump. Extraction and feeding were otherwise normal, it was just the issue of shells getting jammed in the magazine. When this happened, the only way to get the shells out was to manually depress the shell latches. The range I go to only lets you use 00 buck and slugs when firing shotguns, and this issue occured with both types of ammo across multiple brands. I contacted remington, sent the gun back to them for repair, and got it back a few weeks later with an invoice that said the shell latches were broken so they replaced them.
When I took the gun back to the range, there was a short break in period, and then the gun was running flawlessly...at first. All of the 00 I fired through the gun worked perfectly, which ncluded 4 different brands and both regular and low recoil shells. But the 3 different types of slugs I fired through the gun all had the same issue as before. The shells get stuck in the magazine and I have to manually depress the shell latches. This problem occurs with regular and low recoil slugs. It could just be a coincidence since I really havent fired that many different types or brands of shells. but still, why would some shells work 100%, and others cause this issue about 50% of the time?
This long post is just to say I have no idea why this is happening, and would greatly appreciated some thoughts on the matter. The gun has been like this for a few years, but I mostly shoot 00 so it's not a huge deal to me, especially since I rely on other guns for home defense. But I would like to fix the issue if possible.
Thanks for any help you can offer
Baffling shell latch issue
Re: Baffling shell latch issue
Try replacing the magazine spring. it may be binding. Use an "extra power" spring. Should be about $10.00 dollars.
