Determining model and manufacture date of my 870

Post by JagSS »

Hi - I'm new to this forum, and a first time owner of a 'lightly' used Remington 870 with Magpul furniture and a tube extension.
Aside from *** 12 GA, 2 3/4" and 3" *** 3 1/2" ONLY WITH SUPER MAG RECEIVER", there are no other visible markings on the 28" barrel.
The receiver is stamped with a 2D data code, and serial "RS69**6V".
I've read thru several articles, and note the RS serial number prefix represents manufacturing after the Remington/Cerberus acquisition.
The receiver is stamped "Remington 870" (under the 6 shell carrier), with no other visible model variants.
**Older versions of the 870 appear to be easily dated with the barrel and serial letter markings.
So, my questions to the Remington Professionals on this forum are:
1 - Is the manufacture date determined by the prefix serial number letters (RS)?
- If not, how do I date the firearm?
2 - Is the the variant model based on the suffix serial number (V)?
- If not, how can I determine the variant model?
Any other insight you can provide, is most appreciated!
I've put calls into Remington and subsequent e-mails, however, yet to get any response.
Thanks

Well, for anyone interested, I got a reply from RemArms - appended below:

"Please know that after transitional activities stemming from the RemArms, LLC acquisition of certain Remington Outdoor Co. assets RemArms, LLC was not able to obtain full access to all historical Remington records. This includes some production statistics and dates of manufacture of specific Remington firearms. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide additional information.] "

Well, that just about sums up my search for a manufacture date for my Remington 870. POUND SALT!
Very sad that a major firearms company was unable to transition thousands of records during a corporate acquisition.

If anyone knows anything about RS serial number 870's, I would still be very appreciative.

I can't help much and was hoping someone else knew more.

Have you taken the side saddle off? That where the model should be stamped.

I also don't know when the Data Code stamp started but that should be a big clue.

I was surprised Remington replied at all because of the recent acquisition. "not able to obtain" or didn't see a financial incentive to get them? That sucks.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

ETA:

Not sure if this will help, it's a look up Remington manufacture codes.

Unfortunately it only goes to 2012 and your 870 might be younger, certainly since Data Code was invented around 2006 and probably took Remmy longer to decide to use them. It will also only tell the age of the barrel and the barrel could have been swapped out or was from a different manufacturing run.

When I removed the side saddle, the only name stamped was "Remington 870".
I think it was originally sold as an "870 Express Combo", and the shorter barrel has since disappeared.
It would be nice to confirm my assumption...At this stage, I guess no one could argue with me!
I think you assumption of the manufacture date around 2012 is quite correct.
I've read some other 'manufacture date sleuthing', and it's suggested the "RS" birth took place some time around 2010, followed by "CC" around 2015.
Thanks for tossing in your 2 cents - I greatly appreciate your insight/ input!
