870 20ga Loose Forend Nut after Hogue Forend Install

Post by bodhijames »

Hi All,

I started the conversion of my 870 into a home defense shotgun this weekend,

I swapped out the furniture this weekend for the Hogue setup. Really happy with the results.

I use Hogue for my handgun & Airgun grips also.

I'm having an issue with the Forend nut not tightening all the way.
It's close but can't seem to get it to fully torque down. This leaves a tiny
amount of play. The shotgun racks just fine, but want to get rid of the slop.

I'm headed to the hardware store later today to see if I can find a washer to take
up the slack. I'm wondering about an O-ring as a solution.

Curious to hear if anyone else has run into this issue?

I'll update once I find a solution.

The barrel/magazine tube retaining nut has nothing to do with the furniture on the gun. Something else is going on.

It's NOT THE BARREL RETAINING NUT, It's the nut that holds the Forearm on.

YES, I had the same problem & also the gun would rack hard because the rubber would rub against the barrel.

Fixed it the same way you want to, a washer under the Forearm Nut.

I have the same issue on an 1100.

I, like you, was headed to the hardware store to find a brass washer that might take-up the gap enough to allow the magazine cap nut to tighten snugly against the fore end when I saw a thread that talked about using an old O-ring from the gas system on the Remington 1100. I think I may have one to try, and I will try to remember to update the thread with my results.

I hope anyone else with the issue can provide source and specifications for a brass washer, incase the O-ring doesn't fix the issue.

I think you should get a steering wheel wrench to fully tighten the nut.

I think the solution has already been offered and you should expound on why you think an automotive tool should be used on a firearm. I'm certainly no expert nor gunsmith but this sounds like a good potential to damage the firearm with excessive force. Pics would be nice too. I'm certainly up to learning a new technique.

Are you using a shotgun forend wrench, as these types of tools help you get it properly tightened and aligned. We see lots of loose and misaligned forends in the Armorer courses we teach. Loose and misaligned will cause the action bars to get bent, and can also cause feeding issues where you are not getting a single shell to release from the magazine tube or you will get multiple shells to release at the same time.

The Hogue forend may be slightly longer or shorter than the factory one, causing the nut to not fit as snugly. In such cases, adding a spacer or using a different nut could help.
