Are there any mods I can personally do to improve my 870 tactical?

Hello all. First post here and I was wondering if there are any mods that are DIY friendly that I could do to improve the functionality. It's been neglected for the past few years and I got around to giving it a deep clean last night as well as sanding down the upper "indentation" that is supposed to help the shell into the barrel with 400 grit. It was jamming a ton from shells that were cycled through that eventually created a little nick in the indentation and would jam shells before entering the barrel. Anyways I want to give it some attention and I'm wondering if there is something you all could recommend or a link to articles about mods I can read up on. I've ordered a birds head grip but I'm looking for things I could do to make it smoother. Also any tips on must have accessories are welcome. I see a lot of people recommending aftermarket followers. Are these a must have? It's the 18.5 inch barrel with 6 in the tube and a picatinny rail that I use for home defense. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The Volquartsen non-MIM extractor is one of the best and easiest DIY mods, and fairly inexpensive too.

Once you disassemble the action to get to the bolt it takes about 30 seconds to put in the Volquartsen extractor.

You might also consider a high-visibility magazine follower and a replacement safety with larger diameter surface. If you do a search for "Remington 870 tactical mods" you'll find lots of stuff.
