Help with this barrel

Post by Evia »

Hello!

I have the 870 wingmaster shown in the attached pictures. What can you tell me about that barrel? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Looks to me like a vintage Wingmaster, and the barrel has a Cutts Compensator. If I'm right, it was designed with adjustable or replaceable chokes and supposed to help reduce recoil. I had one almost identical to that. Do you shoot it?

Well time's-a-wasting! Some close up pics of the choke system would help. The name is "Cutts Compensator" but that wasn't the brand name that was on mine, I think it was an older firm.

Its strange, because the thing is fixed...not movable parts, forged in the steel. I think that is not a choke system. there´s an "S" engraved at bottom of the first "checkering"...can't fin a pic of a barrel like this.

Re-thinking about that being a Cutts Compensator, as mine was clearly marked. If it's fixed (part of the barrel) then it could just be additional barrel weight to make it swing smoothly. Does the receiver-end of the barrel have normal Remington markings, or something different?

I got no idea what that is. What I find interesting is the serial # has been struck twice on the frame.

In this pic (https://ibb.co/mJcNJDP) I'm going to make an opinion that the device is removeable, as the barrel diameter and bluing clearly look different and transition right at that lower knurled spot, which is longer and seems custom made to grab and twist. Perhaps someone put it on with some Loctite to keep it from loosening or to keep the sight bead aligned at one spot. Examine the south side of that knurled area and see if it appear to be an add-on with threads? Perhaps you could get some Kroil in there standing it upside down to soak down and threads?

In the end, are you curious, or do you want to try and remove it?

Today I carried the shotgun with a gunsmith and the barrel is definitely one piece, it is not bolted. It looks like it was forged. As you say, it is rare that the serial number is engraved twice on the weapon. It also has O..P engraved in large letters. No idea what it can mean. Many questions on this shotgun!
