How much play in mag tube spring when fully loaded?

Recently replaced my mag tube spring when I added an extension and cut it down just enough for all shells to fit. I just read somewhere that if you don't have an inch or so of play in the spring when fully loaded then you are damaging it. Anything to that?

I doubt you damage it but could bind the coils.

Never heard that, and the mag tube coil spring never gets totally smashed into a disc inside the mag tube.
