870 Dating by Receiver S/N instead of Barrel ?

Post by gWebber »

Hi everyone,
Well I’ve tried to research how to date my 870 by it’s receiver S/N instead of the barrel codes and can’t find anything anywhere.
The barrel code is totally meaningless as it’s a Hastings barrel not a Remington. On top of that the info I got from Remington itself (prior to close) totally contradicts every chart I’ve seen.

Example: chart says the “V” means it’s a “Full Frame” and takes 2 3/4” shells .. but ... Remington told me “All Wingmasters are Magnums” 3” shells ... so that doesn’t add up at all.

Meanwhile the Hastings barrel is chambered for 3” shell, but I know there are certain parts in the receiver that also need to be specifically for 3” shells or there will be jams.

There has to be a way other then calling or emailing Remington which right now isn’t possible and from what I hear, not always reliable to get accurate information on this gun?

Anyone know anything?

My S/N is TxxxxxxV (Wingmaster) and I’ve been told date with as much as a six year spread 🙁

Thanks, I eventually did find that “T” to be 1974 after a long time of more searching. Still need to look into if this is a 3” shell ejector or not, seems to me it’s not just the spring but the ejector itself has a different cut to it as well. At least now I know it can be updated to 3” if it hasn’t already been.

I have a 1980 Wingmaster which also ends with a letter V means full size frame but only for 2 3/4" shells not 3", yes it can be updated but do check first before firing.

"All Wingmasters are Magnums" is total crap. 870 Wingmasters in 12 GA were all 2-3/4 for many years. If the receiver does not say magnum on it, it isn't.

Correct. I've restored a number of LEO and correction institution trade-in 870. The ones marked as Police Magnum have been 3 inch magnums all others encountered have been 2.75 inch chambers.
