question about my 870

i recently purchased a 870 12ga and on the receiver it says "Remington 870 express Magnum" and on the 18" cylinder bore barrel it says "Use 2 3/4" or 3" shells in magnum receivers. Use only 2 3/4" in all others'
i just wanna make sure the ammo i bought and what the barrel says isn't pertaining to the super mag receivers and barrels that shoot the 3 1/2' shells and its safe to shoot thew what i have.

If you have a "Magnum" receiver, you can shoot 2 - 3/4 or 3, but not 3 - 1/2. The barrel says that warning on there because people swap barrels out, and the same barrel can be used on a magnum or non-magnum receiver. Also, some barrels are able to use both shell lenghts, but some can only handle the smaller 2-3/4 (usually older barrels). The receiver isn't marked for 12 or 20 gauge though, so they put the markings on the barrel. If your receiver says "Super Magnum" you can shoot 3-1/2 shells, but you may need a barrel that excepts those lenght shells as well as the bore may not be opened up enough to handle the extra length.

The shells you pictured say 3, which means they'll work just fine in your magnum receiver shotgun. So will 2-3/4, but do not try 3-1/2 because those are too big.
