870 with Ribbed top receiver?

I have an older 870 wingmaster serial # 669865M. Not sure date of mfg...it has a ribbed top receiver.A few years ago I took off the long ribbed hunting barrel, now I just ordered a 18.5 12 guage barrel and I was wondering why I don't see any other wingmasters I looked for online with a rib ontop of the receiver? I understand why its there for as better site picture when I had on the old 30 inch barrel. But I cannot find anything online about it?

Its possible that was set up as a competition clays gun, and the extended rib along the receiver helps the sighting plane. We'd love to see some pics. Do you still have the ventilated rib barrel?

Hi thanks for the reply..... no I got ride of the barrel its from the 60's and the rib was coming off. Here are a few pictures....have not seen another like it online and except fo you no one seems to answer any questions here? thanks for your reply.

Sure. That looked like an aftermarket-custom addition for a clays gun, the ribbing designed to deflect glare along the sighting plane and would have extended straight to the barrel's ventilated rib.

This is a slower paced place than lots of forums because of how "one-gun-specific" it is. Plus, most folks are into 870's for HD purposes, not the clay sports. There are several oft-participating members, but also many folks who come with one question, get it, and leave. I'm a moderator, so I'm here all the time (on and off). I try to make sure that someone replies to every question, even if I don't know the exact answer.

Did you replace the action pins with those after-market versions?

That's actually a very interesting piece, possibly rare or unique. I'm sure there's a top end smith out there that could install a matching rib on a barrel. Looks like a keeper.

Thank you for the replies I appreciate it...I don't shoot cloys with it anymore . I just put on a 18.5 inch barrel . Those pins were on it when I purchased it some years ago, also it had a 30 inch barrel that was ribbed like the top receiver. Sold that a few years ago the rib was getting loose and veery old. I contacted Remington about the receiver via email a month ago but no reply. It def looks factory and not aftermarket but who knows when I search for it online I get no hits on it.....it does help with shooting straight though.
