two shells enter the chamber after firing one round

Post by gotfish1 »

I've had this happen several times with my Rem 870 28 gauge bird gun. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Perhaps the magazine spring is too strong since it tries to push two rounds into the chamber after one round is fired and ejected. The shell ejects but two new rounds from the magazine get stuck and I have to pry one out with my knife.

Sounds like a shell latch is sticking. May need a good cleaning, or replaced due to being weak.

Either a shell latch isn't stopping the 2nd shell from exiting the magazine, or the lifter spring may be weak. Does this happen when you slowly cycle the action, or cycle it like you were in the field hunting?

Difficult to answer the question. I fire, then rack another shell for a second shot and two rounds are jammed in the ejection chamber site of the shotgun. I'm guessing the spring needs to be shortened. Any ideas will be welcome. I've had this happen to my 20 gauge too.

I wouldn't shorten any springs. My guess is the shell latch is either worn or not springing out enough to stop the second shell. Search YouTube.

Do not shorten the magazine spring. I promise you the magazine spring is NOT the issue. How do I know because the Police 4+1 magazine spring is LONGER than all the other 870 magazine springs. You have an issue elsewhere and most likely the shell latch.
