Gunbroker auction 870, 1973 receiver serial so chromed bolt and lifter. Stock is a police style with the vertical cuts, not the round corncob type. Buttstock has brown recoil pad and wood under the pad has a factory cut appearance so thinking its original to the stock, which helps somewhat to date it. Walnut has a very thick poly-type finish which I intend to refinish.

It came with a 30" vent rib full choke barrel that seems to have been creased forward of the mag tube. Repair is very ho hum and not sure its straight. I'll have to pattern it to see. Barrel is not original to the gun according to date code.

If the wood is original to the receiver this may be a police gun with a barrel swap. Bluing is OK for an older service gun. Receiver has a couple of deep scratches, some bluing wear, and some rust speckling.

I'll parkerize this one and have a spare barrel cut to 22" and threaded for chokes, then give it to my 8yr old boy when he passes a firearm safety course, hunter safety course, and demonstrates safe gun handling with me at the range. It'll be a few years until he has the frame to handle an 870, even with a youth stock and short barrel.

There was metal under the dried and varnished oil. Nice metal at that. Looks barely used judging from bluing wear. Chrome bolt looks brand new.

Stock set as received. Will strip, stain, and apply formbys tung oil finish.

Nice find. I've had good luck with GB so far; a very nice 1991 Deer Magnum last year and just picked up a NIB 20 ga RS fully rifled slug barrel at way less than anywhere else that even had it in stock.

GB can work out sometimes. Gotta set a hard limit to make the deal a good one, then stick to it without becoming emotionally invested.

Wow, is this finish tough to remove! Almost as bad as the DuPont glossy clear from the 80's. I would never have guessed this was factory finish because it was so poorly applied but Ive never encountered an after-factory finish this stubborn.

I refinished an air rifle stock that had a heavy poly coat. I can't remember which stripper I used but it took a lot of it, almost the whole can.
