What is your favorite era of 870 and why?
My early 80's gun has the best bluing and slickest action. Hard-chromed bolt, metal trigger housing. Dont care for the glossy plastic coated walnut but a nice set of police walnut fixed that.
As much as I appreciate the look of the very early guns, the bolts are not chromed and the metal doesnt seem very hard. But those early guns have nicest wood: smooth walnut, satin finish, corncob forearm.

Re: Golden Age for 870
I saw a vintage Remington advertisement once where a guy was holding a vintage (60's?) 870 Wingmaster Trap Special if I recall. The guy, the gun, the whole scene just evoked a beauty of the bygone era. I'll have to try and find and post up that pic.

Golden Age for 870
My favorite 870 happens to be my very limited run (5500) of the 870 Competition. A dedicated trap gun in a single shot pump configuration with an 1100 recoil system. A unicorn gun for sure.

I followed you up to 1100 gas system. How does that thing work?

Re: Golden Age for 870
Found a video that explained it. Neat idea. Soft recoil of 1100 without slinging hulls all over your friends. What Im curious about:
1. What is unique about the trigger group, if anything? Does it still have a carrier/lifter even though no magazine?
2. Are shell catches installed? If not are there cuts for the catches? Obviously not needed, just curious how it was manufactured.

Re: Golden Age for 870
The receiver is the same at a standard 870. The barrel is different. There is a lifter and what appears to be a mag tube but you can’t put anything in there. You just drop the shell into the ejection port the slide the forearm forward to load the gun. Trigger is the same as well. I can tell you this barrel smokes clays. It’s a 30” full choke but the constriction is different. Whatever they did in the early 80’s they aren’t doin anymore. It looked to be unfired when I got it.
