New to me 870 Youth model

Hi All- I've owned a 870 12 gauge with 18" barrel for home defense for many years. Liked it so much, I went looking for a 870 in 20 gauge. I found one at the Tyler gun show last week in the Youth model with a 20" barrel for $150. The metal is excellent, but the stock and forend were pretty worn. A few coats of poly stain, and it looks great. Took it apart after I bought it, and cleaned it thoroughly as it was " gritty'" feeling. Test fired it today, and it's VERY slick and smooth. A very nice little shotgun!

Looks great! I have a Marlin 336Y youth model that's a tad shorter than the regular model, and figure it may make a great truck gun. Do you shoot the youth model and how do you like the shorter length of pull?

Yes, I shoot the Youth model. It's a very accurate little shotgun, and handles really well. I need to take it out with my 870 12 gauge and make a comparison. By the way, I like a short length of pull, and shortened the LOP on my 12 gauge.

I bought one of those a few days ago, which was the first 20 gauge I've ever owned. I'd been without a shotgun for over a year, and wanted something the wife would shoot if she had to (she's very recoil adverse). Perhaps stupidly, I bought some 3" #4 shot shells to put through it initially, and I was shocked at the recoil...seeming as stout as any 12 gauge I've fired. Maybe it's the design of the youth model, and/or the 3" shells, but the rear of the trigger guard was slapping painfully against my middle finger, which I've never experienced with any other shotgun. Other than that, it's very well made for the price, and functioned perfectly right out of the box.

I'm going to pick up some 2 3/4" shells today and give it another try. If the recoil isn't reduced substantially, it's getting sold or traded. In the gun's defense I'm no longer a spring chicken, and it's been a while since I've fired any shotgun.

People always seem to think that a 20-gauge will recoil less than a 12-gauge, but, all things being equal, throwing 3/4-to-1-oz of shot at 1145fps requires the same motive force and thus the same recoil generated regardless if it is 12-or-20-gauge. The only change is that 12-gauge shotguns tend to be a bit heavier, and can soak up a bit more of that momentum. Even a 20-gauge youth model has 1" less of stock wood and you lose that weight, slightly worse on the Express Synthetic lightweight stocks.
