Safe to shoot steel BBs in the long term?

For target and crow I would shoot the lead, much slower feet per second equals softer shooting/less recoil and more enjoyable.

At my local club, they only allow steel shot for shooting clays.

I would be careful not to push a fixed choke too much with steel. Smaller, slower pellets are better than larger & faster ones, but modern hardened screw-in choke tubes are the way to go if you want to shoot steel on a regular basis.

If you don't have a reason to shoot steel, I would stick to lead. You won't blow up an 870 by shooting steel, but lead will be easier on the gun and provide better ballistics & patterns, all things being equal.

I recommend buying a barrel for threaded chokes and shoot the steel with the correct barrel/chokes.
