Rifle Caliber Accessories

Post by Nick Randall »

I know insert barrels are available for break action shotguns, which are chambered in various popular rifle calibers. Is there such a product that functions like a shot shell that would allow a rifle round to be fired from an 870? Maybe such a device would be too short to be effective. It wouldn't provide any sort of barrel functionality, since the adapter would be the same length as the round. Would that make it unworkable?

I suppose a barrel insert could be machined that you could install by removing the barrel, and reinstalling with the barrel inside. That could work, but you could never cycle rounds from a magazine.

The product designed for the break action was for survival purposes. The reasoning was that a shotgun is the best overall survival weapon, but has limitations. Sometimes a certain rifle round is essential, so the barrel kit was designed to complement the shotgun. I'm just not too fond of the break action concept.

I have seen inserts for break actions where particular pistol calibers can be use with an insert, but I don't recall ever seeing a rifle round.

I believe the main reason for using pistol caliber inserts, by design, they're made to get to velocity and stabilize in a short amount of space (most pistol barrels are 5" or less).

So, inserts work better with them, and create less pressure than rifle cartridges do.

Also remember, not all pistol caliber inserts are the same either. Some don't even have rifling. Other brands do.

If you want a pump action rifle, there are some floating around. The Rem 7600 for example.

But you won't ever get a rifle cartridge to cycle through an 870 and into a barrel insert. Just too many differences.

A 2.8" long cartridge adapter for a repeating shotgun would barely be long enough to fit most rifle rounds, much less provide enough of a "barrel" to get the bullet up to speed and stabilize it. Similar products for handgun bullets exist, and can be enough to produce acceptable velocity, but from what I've heard, they're generally not very accurate. For something designed to be chambered and extracted like a normal shotshell, there's just too much play to expect the bullet to fly exactly in-line with the shotgun's sights. They're marketed as survival tools, but really more suited for plinking (and I know some folks have had issues with them, including damage to their shotguns).

A permanently-modified or custom-chambered barrel, sort of like the muzzleloader barrels that have been made for some pump shotguns, would be a way to get useful rifle-like functionality, though at that point you have a goofy and way overweight single-shot that can't even extract fired cases. I would say you're probably better off sticking with slugs, and just buying a rifle if you need a rifle.
