870 Wingmaster 20 gauge with magnum cartridge steel pellets

Post by Fabien »

Good morning every one,

I'm a french hunter and i like a lot Remington (I've got 7600 Remington 35 Whelen...).

In france, i cannot find the answer to my question.

We can't use cartridges with leads in the wetlands (swamps, ponds...).

I'm interested for a pump-action shotgun 20 magnum gauge in woodwork for duck hunting (870 Wingmaster 20 gauge 28'' Barrel).

I would like to know the shotgun (870 Wingmaster 20 gauge 28'' Barrel in woodwork) with witch i can shoot all ammunitions (steel 20 magnum...).

Can i shoot a magnum cartridge 20 gauge with steel bullets in this shootgun ? Compatibility choke ?

I look forward to your response !!! ;)

Successful continuation.

Please, escuse my english language...

Fabien.

Does your gun have a fixed choke or interchangeable screw-in choke tubes? The 870 is plenty strong enough for steel, but older fixed chokes may not be up to it.

Good afternoon,

Thank you Synchronizor,

This is the description of the 870 Wingmaster:

https://www.remington.com/shotguns/pump ... wingmaster

MODEL 870 WINGMASTER SPECIFICATIONS:

20 gauge BARRELTYPE: Vent Rib Rem Choke SIGHTS: Twin Bead OVERALL: LENGTH48 1/2" LENGTH OF PULL: 14" DROP (COMB): 1 1/2"
DROP (HEEL): 2 1/2"
AVG. WT.(LBS.): 6 1/4

I don't undertand exactly the translation, because it does not existe the same word....

I would like to know if this gunshhot:

- It's a magnum 20 gauge ?
- It has got a fixed or interchangeable chokes ?
- If i can use magnum steel 20 gauge ?

Thank you in advance...

Alright, so it's a current-production Wingmaster. That means it'll have interchangeable Rem Chokes, and it should be fine with steel shot so long as the tube itself is rated for steel. I'm pretty sure it'll have a 3" chamber too; check the markings on the barrel to confirm.

I'd venture a guess that the model indicated is not listed as the "Super Magnum", so it may handle 2-3/4" or 3" shells but not 3-1/2" shells. Most modern 870's handle the 3" Magnums but need the larger receiver for the "super" magnums.

Remington has never chambered the 870 for the 3.5" 20ga.

That would seem to resolve that issue.

Ok, thank you. I have not yet buy this rifle and i can't checking...
I thought that on the description, we could know the chamber....
In france, the magnum is 76 millimetres.
This dimension (unit of French length), allows to know if the chamber of the gun barrel is a magnum.

I think (if I'm not mistaken), 3" = 76 millimètres and so a magnum.

Good evening Synchronizor,

Thanks a lot for your answer. If I understand correctly, this rifle is chambered magnum but not super magnum.
