Got a question on cleaning the Matte Finish on a 870 Express . Mine has been sitting in the closet in a soft case for quite a while now . Took it out today and noticed somewhat spots of maybe rust . Actually looks more like water spots or stains but the gun was dry when put up and it's been sitting a little over a year . It's not usual rust build up that rubs off . Question is how do you clean a Matte finish , just oil it down and rub good or what is the best way ? I have a shotgun clean kit but just wanted to ask you pros cause it's been along time since I been out with the shotgun.

If it wipes off completely with gun oil and a rag, you are done. If not, 0000 steel wool until completely gone followed by gun oil. If 0000 doesn’t do the job, use 000 lightly followed by gun oil.
Gun cases are known to trap moisture causing rust over time. Silicone treated gun socks that “breath” are much better for storage. Before storing, I spray the metal with Barricade by Birchwood Casey for rust protection. It is specifically designed for rust protection for guns. There is even another product that is better, but it can harm some wood finishes.
Take it from me that learned the hard way. You can ruin guns with rust from protracted neglect in a closet, even without using a gun Case.
Good luck.
