Lockup/jam when hot

Post by Re988 »

So my 870 will lockup/jam after a lot of shooting and the chamber gets warm. I know it's a very common problem. I've read on chamber polishing etc. and I've done all that with no positive results. I have a aftermarket 18" barrel and compared the two. Not sure what the hole actually does but why is the aftermarket barrel bigger? I hunted with it yesterday with no lockups/jams. Stock barrel is on the right. Any tips/info would be great! Thanks Image

The notch in the barrel extension is what the bolt locks into.

So which barrel are you having the issue with? The factory barrel or the aftermarket one?

The factory barrel is the one causing the lockup/jam after a round is fired and only when the gun is hot. It gets to where you have to basically mortar it to free it up

Here's the polish job I did on the factory barrel and bolt. Still had it locking up when hot. So I took the aftermarket barrel hunting yesterday and it never happened ImageImage

It is very importan to have smooth recoil lug, especially that area close to the chamber:

I knew that, that's the reason why I polished the chamber. I'm just trying to figure out why the action would lock up after a shot has been fired

It looks like you need to polish this area:

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The area just outside your chamber looks really scratched/chewed-up for some reason.

Wouldn't that area show my symptoms regardless if it was shot #1 or shot #100? As in why would that area be worse when the chamber is hot vs no problems at all when fresh out of the safe?

Hard extraction is usually caused by nicks, burrs, flaring, or rough spots in the barrel extension and/or chamber, and that spot looks really rough. Either that or bad ammo, but I'm assuming you tried more than one brand of shells before you started polishing things.
