I have a 870 from 1950, XX suffix code on barrel. it is a 16ga it has been in a Fire the barrel gut hot enfo to melt the brass on the retaining ring. I thing the barrel is junk. what I would like to know is can the gun be converted to a 12 gauge with a new bolt and barrel or does it need to stay 16 ga

No, as I understand it, there are far more parts differences than just the bolt and barrel, and the receivers probably have internal machining differences as well.
