870 MARINE MAGNUM: POLICE or EXPRESS?

Post by leid »

Howdy guys,
I have several semi-auto shotguns but am looking for a good 18"-20" pump 12GA to replace the slam-fire Ithaca 37 DS POLICE SPECIAL I had back in the '70s. The 870 gets the nod without reservation. This poor 870 will see very harsh treatment while hunting/working including salt water spray. So the MARINE version is probably the best finish for my purposes. If the 870 XCS MARINE MAGNUM model 81308 was still available, that would be about perfect. Barring finding a nice used 870 MARINE MAGNUM with XCS finish, the electroless nickel finish 870 MARINE MAGNUM model 25047 with Rifle Sights should work well. I can easily remedy the "shoot here" shiny exterior with flat black paint. Some of these 870 MARINE 25047s are being advertised as 870P POLICE models. Any truth to this or are they just EXPRESS models like the 870 XCS MARINE already discussed but with electroless nickel finish? I do understand the differences between the EXPRESS and POLICE version: just a few parts/springs and some "Vibra-Hone" polishing with better quality finish. Externally, I do see the forearm on the MARINE MAGNUM 25047 is the shorter POLICE/TACTICAL version. But AFAIK, the receiver nor the box is marked "POLICE" like the blue/parked 870Ps. Any credible info on the 870 MARINE MAGNUM model 25047 would be appreciated. TIA!

Both the wholesaler and the dealer state that their 870P POLICE MARINE MAGNUM with RS (25047) has a "POLICE" marked receiver. In the past, PDs including LAPD have ordered electroless nickel finish 870 POLICE MARINE MAGNUM shotguns for operations in wet environments including harbor patrol. Looks like REMINGTON LE is marking the receiver "POLICE" on these 870Ps.

Actually, Remington's parts documentation lists unique springs, extractors, etc. for the Marine Magnum models, so those small parts differences between the Police & Express models probably don't apply here.

The difference between small parts is the NP3 plating.
