Newbie needs advice...

Post by ZeppoFan68 »

Ok boys, just got my new 870 Tactical 18.5" home. This is my first gun and I wanted to know if these things come with chokes installed. The manual doesn't say how to remove the choke. Also, can I install a rem choke with the breach on the end of it myself, or is that something better left to a gunsmith?

If yours has the ported choke tube, you can stick a screw driver blade or drill bit through the holes (go through both sides) and unscrew the choke tube. You can do this with the barrel on the gun, just make sure the gun is unloaded before you play around near the muzzle.

could also get the wrench that makes it very easy to swap out the choke tubes... just never fire it with out some kind of tube installed if it has this type choke.....

Thanks for the tips, but I don't see any screws at all on or in my barrel. It is one solid piece... :x

ZeppoFan68, it looks like you have fixed IMP CYL choke. I think it is not possible to install alternative chokes on your Remington 870.

Please show us a pic, so we can see what barrel you have.

Hard to tell for sure from your pics. Here are some pics of the muzzles of each kind:

Did you buy the gun new? If so it should have said on the box if it has tubes or fixed choke. If it has tubes I hope you have not been firing it without a tube installed. That will damage the barrel.

ZeppoFan68, thanks, I am happy that my site was useful for you. I think it will be even more helpful with input of the other readers on this forum. For example, Hntbambi posted very good photos which will help readers to see difference between fixed and removable chokes.

Thanks, Hntbambi! A picture is worth a thousand words! :)

Yup. Your HD barrel has no choke. No choke=big spread. You can get your barrel threaded, but I don't recommend that.
