Newbie

Post by Sweaty »

Hi to One and All,

Newbie to this forum from UK so I have nothing like the access to the toys you have in the US of A, but have managed to hold on to my old 3" Magnum Wingmaster 870 and its about to get a 31/2 " Super Mag Express buddy.

As an ex Practical Shotgun Competitor I still keep customising more for my own interest than actual competition these days. I am working on an anti piracy/ maritime solution using the 870 as a base and love the concept of shotguns being universally accepted in virtually all inshore ports, unlike assault weapons which can get the skippers or security details in hot water.

I love the concept that the 870 is versatile and PC as it can fire lethal and non lethal, or even anti material explosive rounds in a maritime security role . A drop in slam fire unit would be great but it must pass the drop discharge safety test- so anybody out there that has successfully conquered this issue [please get in touch so i can order a couple of trigger groups for testing.

We are also trying to start a new paper punching shooting disciple for shotgun slugs her in the UK so any ideas welcome.

Look forward to being accepted as part of the community.

Welcome to the forum. Always cool to see gun enthusiasts managing to enjoy the hobby in less gun-friendly areas.

I know it's been done, but I'm not sure of the exact mechanics, nor am I sure it would be as safe as the stock trigger mechanism with regard to impacts or rough handling (I do know it would be less safe with regard to manipulation - which is why all quality modern shotguns now have disconnectors).

But putting the technical stuff aside, I really don't see the point. Normal pump shotguns are high on recoil and low on capacity, so a spray-and-pray approach is not terribly practical. As for the 870 specifically, with practice, it can be run extremely quickly. The real limiting factors are - from a mechanical standpoint - how fast the magazine spring can feed shells; and - from a practical standpoint - how quickly you can re-acquire your target(s) after the recoil event. Slamfire capability isn't going to change either of those.

Many of your points are valid, and well made but for a home defence or sporting application .........but what if the unit was for a maritime application and had :

1) High Capacity yet well balanced and sprung correctly to allow feeding correctly without muzzle climb [ maintained target acquisition] .
2) Had international legislative acceptance under maritime law as a shotgun ( many nations will accept shotguns 24" + barrel but not assault weapons within their coastal and port limits) but still had the sound signature of an automatic weapon for deterrent purposes and multiple projectile saturation of the target zone.
3) Had the ability to almost 'claymore ' shot patterns aggressors with '00' at CQB on board, and ship-to-ship boarding ranges on moving craft targets[sub 100 yds] - lethal or non lethal, possibly even anti material slugs or other munitions capable of disabling an outboard motor(s), accepting exploding and incendiary munitions may not be quite as acceptable under 2 above.
4) Was to be operated in an emergency by civilians without regular practice so would not be trained in expert operation without short stroking or malfunction clearance. However would be familiar enough for most civilians who shoot shotguns.
5) I have built the prototype but just waiting on some last components before publishing the photo. It's just a project but may have commercial or civilian defensive applications.

I think that everyone on the forum may well understand what the single most versatile defensive weapon is, in trained and untrained hands, at sub 100 yards anyway ? This concept is just a continuation and extrapolation of the capability of the best ever pump shotgun. 2 cents worths invited ....
