I am a new member here. I have had 870s for years and I am finally getting around to joining the forum. I just finished building an 870 tactical. I didn't have a tactical shotgun for home defense so I figured it was time.
That's quite a setup, but what's the point of that big rail on top? It doesn't have sights or an optic mounted on it, and the bead sight on the barrel doesn't seem to be usable with that stock/rail setup.

The top rail serves as a barrel shroud more than anything. Honestly, I originally planned on drilling the receiver and going with their 9" rail and a ghost ring setup. However, the 24" rail was on sale so I went with it. I'm having a problem with it though. The front magazine clamp doesn't seem to fit quite right when used with the Nordic Components magazine extension. The clamp seems to push the extension down a bit. That being said, I am worried about feeding issues. I have yet to fire the gun so only time will tell. It's a heavy bugger but I like it. I plan to have Robar finish the gun next year.
You really added all that stuff before you ever fired the gun?
Anyway, I believe the Nordic magazine extension tubes have a slightly larger outer diameter than standard 870 magazine & extension tubes. The clamp for the rail is probably designed to fit standard 1"-diameter tubes, in which case it would push a larger-diameter tube downward. Can the rail be set up so that it only clamps to the barrel?
