I had a Mossberg 835 a while back, but never shot it. Sold it to a friend, but always wanted a shotgun, I just wasn't sure the 835 was right for me.
Ran into an old friend of my who teaches various firearms classes (including shotgun defense courses) and popped the age-old question to him about the 500 vs. the 870. He was pretty typical and politically correct about them both, but said if it was him, he'd go for the Remmy. He told me the action was a lot smoother than a Mossberg.
Fast-forward to Bass Pro Shops, and a $329 sticker on a 28" 870 Express 3" with "woodish" stock, and a $25 Remington rebate. Ding, ding, ding...we have a winner!
Boy, was he right about the action, even though it's an Express.
I'm pretty happy with it. Lubed it nicely and wow, it really is smooth compared to the 835. "Schlunk! Schlunk!" instead of "Cru-u-u-u-n-c-h Shunk!"
I'm sure the 500 is a good shotgun, but I'm pretty happy with my new 870 Express.
