I guess I have the fever now

Post by Malpaso »

Bought another 870. Funny story. Guy buy's this 870 from Bass Pro. Brings it home and wife says no way. He brings it to a LGS and tells them to raffle it off for one of the charities they support. The guy who wins it (for a $10 ticket) doesn't want it. I buy it from him for $275. Everyone is happy. Now I have a trap gun. I think it is a model made just for Bass Pro because I can't find it anywhere. 28" Vent Rib Barrel, Rem Choke, Matte Finish.

Looks like a good buy. Nothing fancy, but with the right choke tube and maybe a few other tweaks, it'll break clays about as well as any other 870. Make sure you clean that barrel thoroughly and lube your choke tube threads before you take it shooting for the first time.

Sounds like a standard #25568 870 Express to me.

It's hard to make broad recommendations for chokes. Your pattern will be influenced by the ammo you're using, how far you're shooting, the specific design of your choke (constriction isn't everything), and the individual quirks of your gun. I'd say basic Modified, Improved Modified, or Full tubes would be places to start, but you really need to do some pattern testing with your gun and ammo to know what pattern you're throwing, and dial in on the best choke for you.

As for other mods, probably the most important thing would be a good recoil pad, if your gun came with one of those solid rubber torture devices originally. Target loads aren't terribly hard-kicking, but a couple hundred of them can certainly take a toll if you don't have a bit of cushion between the butt and your shoulder.

Apart from that, maybe a light sear spring, added weight in the stock and/or mag tube to steady your swing and soak up recoil, or a mag plug that cuts capacity down to 1 or 0 shells if your trap range is anal about how you load your shotgun. Some trap shooters like to use fiber-optic sights that snap or stick onto a barrel's rib or replace the factory bead; others pull out or cut off the factory bead and use the rib by itself. I wouldn't consider any of these mods absolutely necessary, especially as you're starting out; but if you really get into trap shooting and you're the tinkering type, they're some ideas.
