Remington 870 Exspress tactical

Post by David »

I'm currently in the process of trying to save some money to buy a tactical shotgun for home Defense, my friends told me to stay away from the Remington 870 express that it wasn't reliable .And not to buy it from Walmart ? That the parts were cheap on the inside. And that the guns sold at Walmart were second hand and made cheap just for Walmart . Please let me know,I have found one I like at Walmart for $357.00 :?:

It's the same Express Tactical you'll find anywhere else, have no fear. As far as it being unreliable? Millions of owners would disagree. Occasionally some new Expresses have a little trouble ejecting spent shells. A lot of shooting and/or polishing the chamber will solve that. Not a big deal at all.

I would have no reservations about buying that shotgun.

David, I couldn't agree more with Steve....go for it! I'm the new owner of an Express Tactical 6+1, with XS rear ghost and front sites. Purchased it from Cabela's for $489.00, and will get a $25.00 rebate from Remington on top of that. I have run about 200 rounds of live ammo and snap caps through it, and it's getting smoother by the day. Love this shotgun.

Like others have said, an 870 is an 870, no matter where it's sold. Wal-Mart doesn't carry special refurbished or inferior models, anyone who says so doesn't know what they're talking about. As for Expresses, while they have lighter-duty finishes and a couple slightly different parts, they are mechanically identical to any other 870s, and have interchangeable parts if "upgrading" something will let you sleep better at night.

One thing I would caution you about, however, is that the Express Tactical models sold by Wal-Mart tend to be the simplified, single-purpose variants with the single-piece 6-round magazine tubes. These are just as good as any other 870 if you only need a basic HD gun, but if you also want to be able to change barrels and take this gun hunting or skeet shooting like you can with normal 870s, you should look for a different model with the standard 4-round magazine tube.

Again, these aren't special Wal-Mart models, they're sold all over, they're just usually the type of Express Tactical that Wal-Mart likes to stock, and Wal-Mart employees don't always know to point the differences out to customers.

Fear not! Buy from Walmart, there is no difference, no cheap parts. Purchased my 870 Tactical Express from Sportsman's warehouse 2yrs ago for about $349.00 plus tax. Outstanding Shotgun.

I've come across that video before, and I'd take it with a grain of salt. It's worth taking into consideration that this guy had some problems with his 870, but he gets some facts wrong in the video and talks about performing mods that have nothing to do with the problems he's experiencing.

If you want a review that'll give you a good, detailed look at what you'll be getting, I recommend this one from Gunsumer Reports.
