870 blued, how to store/care for?

Post by 68strat »

Hi all,

I will post pics of my new build which is an 870 police with wood furniture all blued.

Was noticing fingerprints etc show up well on the blued surface...and I know this finish although beautiful is less sturdy than parkerizing.

With that in mind...what is the best way to store the gun or care for it so it does not produce rust etc? Like...should I be wiping it down constantly with a thin coat of oil? if so what products are good to use with this?

Thanks!

PS: i am new to actually caring for my weapons. I have an AK 47 and to care for that I toss it in a mud puddle to get the larger chunks of dirt off of it...so this will be a new experience lol.

There are specific cloths that can be used for a quick wipe down before going into storage. Do not store it in a foam or leather case. Do not store it under the bed or in an automobile trunk for any appreciable length of time. Having it so air can circulate around it, like in a gun safe, is best.

As for which kind of oil to use, I favor CLP. Unfortunately, it does contain a carcinogen or two. Ballistol is a great product--toxic--but not carcinogenic. For whatever reason my wife likes the licorice smell better than the Hoppe's No.9 smell that I favor.

Most blued surfaces are able to withstand abuse better than one might think! As for parkerizing, my 870 is visibly worn, scratched, etc. from so many practice sessions with inert snap caps, loads at the range, etc. Not pretty, but still a good, solid shotgun. ;)

I have a blued Wingmaster barrel, and so far it's been fine without any special care or babying, just like my Express-finished and Parkerized parts. I'd say just keep your finish clean & free of fingerprints (I just use clean cotton rags), oil it every once in a while, and don't let it sit wet or store it in a humid area, and you should be fine.

Some specific tips: If your gun gets wet or dirty in the field, wipe it with some oil as soon as possible, then take it apart and clean & oil it as soon as you get home. If you're out on a cold day, wipe the gun down with some oil before bringing it into a warm building, to protect it from the condensation that will form on the cold metal. Before storing the gun, wipe a thin coat of oil on the exposed metal surfaces.

You might notice that oiling is a common theme here. A bottle/spray can of oil and a clean rag works fins for this at home, but for out in the field, something like these individually-packaged Rem-Oil wipes are very convenient.

OMG the rem oil wipes are dare i say cute.

I have a feeling if i got those the baby might accidentally get a rem oil wipe instead of a baby wipe...
but that wouldn't be all bad now...would it?

Well, you'd have a pretty fun time trying to explain why the baby reeks of gun oil...
