Gun is ejecting 2 shells at a time

Post by Gaspereau »

After firing a shell and pumping once, my 870 12 gauge will often eject the fired shell AND the next unfired shell from the magazine. All this happens smoothly and the chamber is now empty with 2 shells on the ground.

I've hunted with the gun for the past 35 years. It takes only 2 3/4 inch shells.

The problem occurs with both heavy hunting loads and light skeet loads.

Is the old girl just plain wore out?

How and when is the second shell being ejected? Is it falling out of the ejection port immediately after being released from the magazine? Or is it falling out during feeding, while you're moving the slide forward?

I honestly don't know where the slide is when the second shell is being ejected. I only notice the problem when I pull the trigger on the second shot and all I get is a click...

When I empty the gun at the end of a hunt, the problem never occurs...the shells cycle through fine.

I'm guessing something in your gun is worn or not functioning properly. You should be able to fix or replace the contributing components, but it's hard to identify the exact culprit or culprits without more details. I'd recommend taking it to the range, seeing if you can replicate the problem, and then paying attention to exactly how it happens. You could also try cycling some snap caps or dummy shells through your gun at home.

There's another possibility that comes to mind; kind of a shot in the dark, but how are you holding the gun when you experience the problem? If you tilt an 870 over on its side, with the ejection port facing downward, the shell from the magazine can roll out due to gravity if you work the slide slowly enough that it has time to do so.
