First build

Post by gacton »

Well, I just bought my first 870 for personal use. It's a police magnum, I bought from my area police ammo/gun distributor. It was a trade in from an area department. Parkerized, beat up wooden forend, speed feed stock, typical that has lots of miles in a patrol car rack. Plans are to refinigh in od duracoat, new speed feed pistol grip stock, choate +2 mag extension, magpul moe forend, and new parkerized trigger plate. I also bought an Aim Sport 20" rail, deAli couldn't pass up but unsure if I'll use it. Gun is fully disassembled, ready for a good cleaning/de greasing for paint prep. Will do that once the mag extension comes in, it will be painted as well. I'll try to post some pics as it goes along if I can figure it out on my tablet. Thanks in advance, I've been cruising the site and forums for ideas and hints...

Welcome to the forum. We'd love to see pictures.

870 trigger plates aren't Parkerized, they're either powdered aluminum painted black, or polymer. Unless your trigger plate is broken, it's probably not worth spending the money for an entirely new trigger plate assembly, just replace any worn or damaged parts inside the assembly, and re-paint the trigger plate if it needs it.

Thanks for the info on the trigger. I wilol try to paint it, cosmetic only. The trigger guard has a blued type finish, worn off to Shiney silver, aluminum maybe, ina couple spots from gun rack. The ones at work have the rougher texture like parkerized on them. If it turns out well I won't replace. I had a stroke, took the cap off the mag tube to find the end of the tube mis-shapen, dented in like someone tried tout pry the old style spring catch out. Fortunately I was able to smooth it out, and everything slides like butta!

Remington makes their aluminum trigger plates with both matte and glossy surfaces to match Parkerized and blued 870s, respectively. Under the paint, it's the same powder-cast aluminum.

How'd you get the magazine tube back into shape?

The threaded end of the mag tube was bent inward. I used a cone shaped mandrel lying arounD the garage. Very gently, I tapped it into the end of the tube, opening up the end reshaping it back to round. End cap threads right on, and follower drops in, and slides right out. Mag tube extension and new ss follower should work fine.

I ordered a choate +2 mag extendion and vang comp ss follower. Today I painted the barrel, reciever, trigger plate, and mag extension with duracoat. I must say, it was easy, and came out awesome! I went with tactical flat od green, shake and spray. I take a few picks to post, but hAve been having trouble here with pics, that's why none yet. I'm gonna give it a few days to cure before I reassemble.
