After destroying the Magpul forend tool, as well as the forend tube nut on my new (old) Wingmaster, I'm going to spring for the "right tool". Looks like these two are good options. Anyone have a working knowledge of either/both? I'm looking at the Advanced Technology one because I also have a 590A1.

Isn't the Magpul tool just plastic? I use my Leatherman to remove & tighten my fore-end tube nut, and it's always worked well. Granted, I keep my 870 in good repair, but unless you're working on a lot of different shotguns, the specialized tool might not be worth the money to you.

Not necessarily, but since I could only get this one off with a hammer and nail punch, I don't want to run into that situation again.Synchronizor wrote:unless you're working on a lot of different shotguns

How about a third option? I went with this one from UTG via Amazon:

It has worked very well for me.

You know, a fore-end wrench is not a complicated thing, you could probably make your own fairly easily. All it really has to be is a 1"-diameter piece of tube or rod with a short section of smaller rod or key stock stuck through the middle of it to engage the two notches in the fore-end tube nut. Add some grip tape or a simple T-handle to one end, and you should have something that works just as well as any $50 pre-made tool.

That one is in my cart waiting for me to pull the trigger (no pun intended - But I'll take it as long as I left it hanging there). Put a nip in the side of the tube using an alternative (needle nosed pliers) and I'm not going to let that happen again.Rex Dart wrote:How about a third option? Anybody using blue or teflon or anything on that by the way...?

No, I just make sure the threads are clean and put it on dry. Never had an issue. If you're using a polymer fore-end, you should be safe putting a little oil on the threads to make sure they don't seize.

I made one from a 1"-heavy walled copper pipe coupling, from Home Depot's plumbing dept.
Just dremeled out the recesses.Teeth measurements are .15-.16.Plus I added 4 holes for a cheater bar.(ok,its a allen key).
Cost me around $4.00,plus 30 minutes with the dremel, filed, then polished cut edges with a cratex wheel.

I got this cheap plekter, but you need to put in a screwdriver through that hole if the nut is too tight. Fits 870 and the Mossbergs.

Looks like a slide assembly, which are rumored to work as well.sven wrote:I got this
