I saw the post here on the XS Sight Systems detent swage tool which looks great and it is cheap. I need help on understanding all the detent functions so if I add an extension tube and later want to remove it and go back to all original parts, what will happen.
This is what I can think of but am not sure on any of this.
1. Detents keeps the black plastic end piece from falling out when the end cap is removed. Keeps it from turning so the end cap can ratchet tight.
2. Detents don't appear to have any function with the magazine follower other than the follower slots have to be rotated to the detents position to remove/install.
3. If remove an extension tube and go back to all original parts I lose the ratchet function and have to install a wavy spring washer to hold the end cap tight.
Have I got it right? Is there more?
I'd really appreciate your help please.
Thanks!

Re: Functions of the Detents
That's all accurate, though I'll add a couple other things:
> If you're going to keep using your original magazine cap, it's a good idea to place something over the end of the spring to keep it from snagging the teeth on the inside of the cap. One option is to simply use your old spring retainer, or you can use a factory magazine follower, which doesn't take up as much space.
> If you want to use a spring retainer to keep the spring in the magazine tube when you have the barrel off, you can order an old-style spring retainer that is intended for non-dimpled magazine tubes, and stays in place through friction.

> For keping the magazine cap or extension from coming loose, an alternative to the wave washer is the old-style external ratchet system that uses a locking detent in the barrel guide ring and magazine caps or extensions that are dimpled or slotted to engage it. These detents can be added to barrels by a gunsmith, and many barrels still come with them.

Re: Functions of the Detents
Thanks Elite!!
I really appreciate the help as I wasn't sure what I would be getting into. Super tips on options to hold the cap in place. I like the detents added to the end cap idea. It was very nice of you to take the time to post the pics as they make things very clear.!
Thanks again!
