Shell latch bent??

Post by mcdeez333 »

got a used 870 from a friend. Id say 4 out of ten rounds are failing to come out of the tube after the spent shell ejects. I can see me Shell Latch (at least thats the technical term for it) is in the way when i rack it back. with a little push, I can move the latch out of the way and the shell will pop right out. Could it be bent? or could there be a pice missing? It really looks a little mi-shapen in my opinion. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

It could be your shell latches, or the ramps on your action bars that move the shell latches could be worn/damaged. Either is a possibility, but I believe the action bars tend to be the first thing to wear out since they're made from a softer alloy.

I'd suggest taking your gun apart and checking both. Do the action bars look chipped or worn? How are the shell latches sitting with the action bars, slide & bolt removed?

Synchronizor, I notice you're an elite shotgunner, I was wondering if you had a link to replacement parts that you'd recommend. I haven't chkd the action bars yet, but I'm on it. But if they are worn or the latches are worn, I'd like to replace them. I do see that the latch doesn't quite move out of the way far enough. I was in Academy and convinced the guy to let me strip it lol. A new 870 and an 870 express both had latches that moved plenty more than mine did. Its gotta be something simple I hope. Anyway, whatever links you have would be great. Midway,Brownells etc.. I know about those. But maybe an 870 specialty site? Thanks again

No website stocks a complete range of 870 parts. The best resource for replacement 870 parts is Remington's customer service department. You can download a PDF from their website that lists all factory parts for all Remington firearms, with prices and part numbers. Using that you can look up what you want, and place an order over the phone or with a mail-in order form. Look here for a download link and more details.

Be aware that if you order by phone, you might run into some abnormal hold times right now. I've never had issues with it in the past, but Remington just announced that they will be replacing all problematic R51 handguns free of charge (and with some additional extras), and the replacement is being handled through the same customer service number. I've been told Remington has hired more operators to handle the load, but you may still end up waiting for a little longer than you normally would.
