I recently took my nephew shooting for the first time. A 12-gauge pump the ideal first gun to shoot? Nah, but with a slow progression from light birdshot rounds, then into some buckshot, he was getting nice groupings of 1 oz. slugs in no time.
I took a cell phone video of the very first slug he shot and that reaction is priceless!

Hm, couldn't get the video to appear here in the text box. Oh well.

Re: The Grin on A New Shooter's Face
Worked okay for me. I remember when I went through the academy and this really small Asian guy was shooting the 870 for the first time. He didn't pull the stock tightly into his shoulder and really took a pounding. He stuck with though.

Same look I had on my face when I shot a 3 1/2 inch magnum turkey load out of my cousins Mossberg 835!
