Howdy,
New member here who is in the process of outfitting his first 870 as a tactical shotgun. Last night I took my 870 down to put some new parts in it including a van comp safety, police dog carrier spring, and a non-mim extractor. However, I noticed that the extractor is not ejecting snap caps anywhere near as good as the MIM part. Thoughts? I am thinking I may need to break out the calipers to check the thickness.

I think I would test fire it at the range before seeing for sure there is a problem. Thats just what I would do though.

Machined extractors sometimes require fitting before they'll drop in and operate properly. MIM extractors all come out of the same mold, so they seem to be more consistent, and will drop right in without any problems. If you open the action and move the extractor in and out, does it seem stiff and tight in the bolt, or does it move freely?
If you're having issues with the machined extractor, I'd recommend putting the MIM one back in until you can figure out what the problem is. I have a MIM extractor in my 870, and it's never given me any problems at all. Honestly, from everything I've seen here and elsewhere, I think the MIM extractors are better parts. As much as folks bad-mouth the MIM parts, it's always the machined extractors that won't install properly, or hang up in the bolt, or have interference issues, or gouge the receiver because they weren't made properly. I've yet to see a MIM extractor cause any of those problems.
