I'm new here, so hello! I have an 870 Express Magnum with a 20" barrel. Nothing odd about that. However, the barrel has rifle sights and is threaded for choke tubes. That is odd. I've worked in a gun store for a long time, and have never seen another one. My gunsmith who refinished has also never seen another one. I added the tube extension and police furniture, but it is stock other than that. Any input?

It's not that uncommon. A lot of rifle-sight barrels have fixed chokes, but Remington makes Rem Choke versions as well. I have a 20" rifle-sight barrel that's threaded for Rem Chokes, and that makes it a very versatile barrel. I can put a Skeet or IC tube in that barrel for slug shooting or home defense, Modified of Full for protection on the road or in the woods, Extra-Full for turkey hunting, or I can pop a breacher choke in for the annual family Christmas tree hunt.

Synchronizer, I love your Christmas Tree saw! Saves a lot of time I'm sure. What kind of saw teeth are you using, 00 Buck?!

Nah, just #8 birdshot. The whole "everything's effectively a slug within X distance" presumption is overly-simplistic and often applied inappropriately, but it holds true well enough for something the size of a Christmas tree trunk when you've got the muzzle pressed right up against it.
Re: New guy with an oddball
I have never seen a 20 inch barrel with screw in tubes and rifle sights from Remington ( please don't get excited I have just never seen one ) . I had one threaded and like it a lot. I have IC, MOD, Full , XF , XF straight rifled , Flush rifled and extended rifled. Funny thing the flush tube shoots sabot slugs better than the extended tube. Use mod and it shoots foster slugs well use the straight rifled tube and it shoots about any shot in a tight pattern. I made mine over 20 years or more ago. The first one was on a Winchester 1400 with Briley tubes for buckshot. BTW in a tight space and want spread send a load of #4 buck thru that rifled tube.

Actually that barrel came out not too long after the Rem Chokes came out. The barrel one i have i purchased the gun to get in about 88 or 89 IIRC. Currently it's my duty shotgun, loaded with Estate 8 ball (8 00 pellets at a good velocity for hunting from many years ago) and through the modified choke tube will give good hits out to 45-50 yards. With Brenneke slugs it will still do about 4" at 100 yards through the same tube.
