Stuck Choke Tube

Post by Rider1970 »

Hi guys, new member here from MI. I just picked up a new 870 express combo from my LGS. I seem to be having trouble removing the factory choke. Should I have the LGS try to remove it? I had the salesman try at the time of purchase and he couldnt but I thought, no big deal I'll remove it when i get home. Well I cant, it's stuck pretty good. Is there something I can try before taking it to the shop?

Thanks,

Ed

I don't know what kind of choke tube wrench comes with the new 870 Express models, but this one came with one of mine. It has a 3/8 square in it that will allow you to put a ratchet or breaker bar in it for some extra mechanical advantage.

You could try immersing the end of the barrel in a penetrating oil or cleaner for a while. If you just can't get it loose though, take it in to the gun shop or a gunsmith, someone who knows how to get a stuck tube out properly. I wouldn't recommend trying to crank on it with a big wrench or other tool if you're not sure what the problem is, you could just FUBAR the threads.

Once you do get it out, keep the choke threads lubricated, and clean the tubes and barrel threads regularly to keep it from getting stuck again. I have a video on the subject here.

I got the choke tube out. I spayed break free on it, let it sit for 5 mins, this took a socket wrench, but that on the choke tube wrench supplied by remington and gave it a twist. I think I just needed some leverage that I could not get with the choke tube wrench alone. I'm sure the Break Free helped too.
