Forend Wrench Tool

Post by mainetac »

I am looking for any ideas for a poor man's forend wrench tool for Rem 870. Can't see spending the money on something I am going to use once or twice, interested in anyone's hints or ideas. Thanks.

I've actually read that you can use the gun's bolt carrier as a forend wrench. I haven't tried it yet, but it would be pretty cool if that worked. I guarantee you already have that tool haha

The slide assembly doesn't work very well as a tool, but a basic pair of narrow-nose pliers is all you need. I use my Leatherman. Make sure the jaws are open wide enough that they won't chew up the fore-end tube, and then use the pliers to tighten the nut or break it loose. Once the nut's loose, you can just use your fingers to thread it on or off.

I am a firm believer in using the proper tool for the job. Sometimes needle nose pliers will work, but Ive worked on a few 870s that the nut was so tight (rust/dirt) that the only way to remove it was with the proper tool. I remove mine about once a year to clean and oil the tube and I only use the correct tool.
