I am working on a new 870 project and I finally found a 20" fully rifled 870 express barrel that is non-cantilever. However, I need to remove both the front and rear rifle sights. I have yet to find a fully rifled barrel that does not have these sights on it. From what I've read elsewhere, it seems these sights are soldered onto the barrel, much like the bead sight on a regular 870 barrel.
I'm more than willing to just grind them down if that is at all possible without messing up the barrel. I'm not too worried about cosmetic damage to the barrel, as the location that the sights were in won't be seen afterwards. It will have a rail and muzzle brake covering up where the sights used to be.
Is this a project that I can do myself, or am I going to have to get a gunsmith involved at some point?

Re: Removing front and rear rifle sights from an 870 slug ba
Remington makes a 25.5" heavy-wall rifled 870 barrel that's specifically designed for long-range slug shooting with a receiver-mounted scope. There are no sights or scope mounts on the barrel, and it has a threaded hole in the extension that allows it to be pinned to the receiver. Seems like that would be a better way to go if you want to maximize your accuracy without a cantilever-mounted scope.

Thanks for the information. I found the gun that uses that barrel. It is a Remington 870 SPS Super Slug. The barrel is a bit longer than I would like, but I guess it could be trimmed down. I wonder if the barrel would pin to my receiver, or if that is a feature specific to the 870 SPS Super Slug?Synchronizor wrote:Remington makes a 25.5" heavy-wall rifled 870 barrel that's specifically designed for long-range slug shooting with a receiver-mounted scope. I've found other barrels that would work, but they are cantilever. I might could purchase one of those and attempt to remove the cantilever mount. It won't be seen underneath the rail anyway.

It would need some fitting, but that would just involve drilling a single hole for the screw to pass through. Other than that screw hole and some purely cosmetic touches, the Super Slug receiver is identical to other 870 receivers. You can also use that barrel without the screw if you want to wait on having the hole drilled while you're putting together the rest of the build.dharbert wrote:Thanks for the information.
