Definitely an easy upgrade for anyone thinking it may be tough. It's not like fitting a safety on a 1911 or anything, it's merely a remove and replace part. I tried the Wilson/Scattergun safety but to me it felt like the safety was on even when it was off. This is due to the shape of the button and just my general feel. I'm used to feeling the button "flush" when the safety is off and the Scattergun one protrudes feeling more like the stock safety when it is on. Training with it obviously would cure that but being I have several I decided to keep them the same with the stock button.

It's definitely worth mentioning that an oversized safety won't always be an improvement over the flush factory one. Training and familiarity aside (though those are worth considering as well); a user's hand size, stock shape, technique, and other things will all affect whether an oversized safety is a benefit or detriment.

Since my new 870 is also for home defense, I just ordered a S&J Follower and Oversized Safety combo off of eBay for $30 with free shipping. Avg price for each is $17-20.

I've had my S&J safety for over a year on my 870P. I love the thing, should be OEM from Remington. Same goes for their hi-vis followers.

I love that there are so many options for aftermarket safety buttons, and that they're so simple to install, but I think the standard flush safety buttons should remain the factory default.

An oversized safety can be faster and easier to manipulate with certain stock/grip designs, or when wearing really heavy gloves; but in a lot of other cases they'll either make a very minor difference, or just get in the way. They're also easier to unintentionally deactivate, and not as simple to check by feel. I'd encourage folks to wait until they get the rest of their builds figured out and put in some practice time with the factory safety before deciding whether or not they need to change it out.

I've upgraded three of my 870's to the enhanced size safeties. Two to the Vang Comp units and one to the S&J medium safety. All work well.

I have Scattergun Technologies/Wilson Combat oversize safeties on all my HD 870's...which total over 10 or so at this point. All mine have factory furniture on them in either wood or synthetic. Many of them have been in place for several years. Never had an issue or complaint with any of them. They work quite well for my needs.

I ordered and installed a S&J oversized safety and a S&J follower for $30 off eBay. I really like that the forefinger hits the safety at my knuckle. Even before looking, it gives clear indication that the safety is engaged. Now, I need to get one for my 12-gauge semi.
