I have one just like this, except I have an ATI solid adjustable stock not a recoil reducer. and I added a magpul for grip with an angle grip to it, I use the sling mounts as well, pretty cool set up, I plan to put a mag tube mounted short rail for a little light.

Synch,
I agree with you fully here. Like I said that is the only downside I can see personally. I do agree with you about it being much easier for take down. I already miss how much easier it was to disassemble my 870 before my extension... but I really like having an extension :D Also yes, if you are not careful or don't know what you are doing then the constant removal and installation of your extension could definitely cause some problems. Crossthread being my main concern there. I am VERY careful every time I re-install my extension to insure that I do not crossthread and make sure that it is still parallel with my barrel.

If he plans on only using it for HD or Combat than I am sure that this gun will be just fine for him. Me personally do plan on purchasing a slew of different barrels for mine. Police, Tactical and longer for Hunting once in awhile. Even though I am a bowhunter, not a rifle hunter, I still want to be able to have that option in case the SHTF and I need to rely on my 12ga for food as well. ;)

This is definitely a home defense gun only. This would be my 7th or 8th 870 that I have owned (that does not count the almost dozen ones that sat by my right leg on my patrol car) but the first one that was bought with the specific purpose to sit next to my bed.

I do have one thing that is taking a little getting used...once it was fully accessorized and the side saddles are fully loaded (6+1 on the tube, and 11 on both side saddles) this thing gets quite heavy compared to my trusty patrol car model with just 5 shots. The added weight really helps with recoil but after several rounds of stress or tactical reload drills my arms are feeling the weight. I realize that on a HD setting that if I have to use it it will be less than 3-minutes of carrying but those long training sessions are brutal. Getting old sucks.

The wife is also having fun learning some shooting drills like stress/tactical reloads and shooting while moving from cover to cover both forward and backwards. Want to see how good (or bad) you are as a shot try a single shot-walk-reload-shoot drill. Best drill ever is the 10-shot walk from 25-yards. By the time you are done you are 3-yards away and your arms are about to fall off.

Yeah I have an express mag with the Magpul furniture, Mesa six shot side saddle (quite a hefty piece of aluminum) and a +2 extension. When I have the saddle loaded with NONE in the tube that beast weighs a ton. Huge difference from stock. IMO totally worth it as I am building it for HD and Combat in case the SHTF and having the extra rounds makes me feel more at ease. I am currently looking for a suitable sling to help when I am walking my property with it or when I start to take it with me on my excursions up north. I am not a small guy but am not huge either and this thing tires me out when I run drills and so forth.

I'd recommend the Magpul MS3 sling. This is nice because u have locking clasps that unlock, detach, and go from one to two point in seconds. Literally probably 2 with a bit of practice and time. I love this set up because its nice to walk the property in 1-point and be able to pull up to a shooters stance immediately while also having the option to switch to two-point immediately if the situation occurred where I needed to climb, carry, or any other situation a 2-point might thrive.
