I have a relatively new 870 20 gauge. When it is assembled it functions perfectly. However, from the beginning I have had difficulty re-assembling the 870 after firing and cleaning. Currently I cannot get the breech bolt / slide bolt assembly with the action bars properly seated in the receiver. The assembly sticks and does not slide all the way in.
A neighbor with the same gun (12 gauge) has looked my 870 over and is of the opinion that probably one action bar is slightly misaligned. Is this a common problem?

I'm not sure it's an alignment issue, even if the action bars were bent slightly, the slide assembly and receiver should hold them the proper distance apart once assembled. It's more likely that you just haven't gotten the hang of working the shell latches while reinserting the action bars. You have to depress both shell latches in a specific sequence, it's not as simple as when you're taking the gun apart.
Here's a video showing how it's done.
