Barrel w/ GG&G sling mount detent question

Post by fawkes »

Currently I have a Carlsons 18.5" barrel with chrome lined bore (LOVE IT), but I'm also installing a GG&G front sling mount and I know both the barrel and the sling mount have a ball detent and I was curious if they would interfere with each other? I intend on having the sling on the left side so I'm not sure

Here's a pic of the barrel and the mount that I don't have yet.ImageImage

Thanks!

Ideally you want the ball bearing to line up with the detent. This will transfer the pressure from the ball detent across the ball bearing in the sling mount to the cap or extension. From what you are showing me there the sling mount in the picture would be mounted on the right side of the shotgun as you are holding it. If you mount the sling plate where the ball bearing in the sling plate does not go over the ball detent in the barrel lug then the ball bearing will bear against the barrel lug and you will not get a good fit from the magazine tube cap or extension. The ball needs to "lock" into a depression in the cap or extension to work as designed.

I have a GG&G QD sling plate similar to that one, with the same staked-in ball detent. If the version you're looking at is anything like mine, I'd recommend steering clear for reasons I went into in this thread.

As for the detent in the barrel itself, if it's anything like the spring-loaded detents in factory Remington barrels, it shouldn't interfere with a sling plate. Try using a flathead screwdriver, a knife blade, a coin, or some other flat metal item to depress the detent. If you can push it down flush with the front face of the guide ring, you're good to go.

Thanks for the replies. The sling mount I got doesn't seem to be the one you had problems with and everything went together well!
