Outdoor range thoughts and opinions?

Post by CynicZ »

Hey there guys,
Ill start off saying my name is Josh, I am 21 Years old. I have always been into having a side profitable hobby. Since i was 13 when I built my first gaming PC I have built, sold, traded computers along with writing custom bot programs for several games which i ran high-scale to make profit. I have been into managing websites and internet marketing for profit. Right now I hold a full time job working for a US wide power plant boiler cleaning company. I make roughly 35-40G a year (throwing wage out for future reference). I have a couple low monetary valued assests that I own, paid off in my name. Such as a 06 stunted R6 crotch rocket, 08 yamaha raptor 700R quad and a 2012 Genesis coupe paid off. I feel I am doing fair for my age as Ive worked hard since I was 15. I also have about 2 grand invested in reloading equipment.

Me and my fiancee are buying a house in the next month or so. It is hard to find decent non-trailer homes with land in the country in my area (St Louis area). Since I spend money on range memberships and then indoor range trips, we have talked about buying seperate land in the country surrounded by woods and building a range.

My idea on the range would be 150Yards backed by dense healthy woods. Laying concrete at the probably 165Yard mark and stack old railroad ties covered by dirt making a 12foot berm if not higher. Having railroad ties at 25,50,75,100,150 yards to mark the distance.
Concrete for the shelter covered in a semi cheap aluminum roofing with shooting tables.

Now to the questions, what is the typical costs for building a outdoor range?
What do I need to look for as in land, layout, area etc?
Would I be able to market it like as in fencing the area off, using electronic digital lock and say change the code monthly. then selling memberships to friends/family/family friends etc?

I love the idea of owning a range as I hate driving a hour for a 100 yard outdoor decent range.

whats your thoughts guys?

I would start by contacting a NRA endorsed insurance company to get a liability insurance quote.

Not all good practical ideas make good businesses.

Just my 2 cents worth......

aside from marketing but for solely personal use, whats some things i should look for in design and function. obviously land somewhat higher in the area and flat so it isnt prone to flooding.
